What makes a good website?

The User

Perhaps the most important factor to consider when building a website, the user is the reason the site exists and your design and build should reflect that.

The user wants to access your information quickly and easily without unnecessary obstacles and diversions. The core message of your site should be the main focus and your information should be laid out in an easy-to-navigate menu system.

The Owner

The owner of the website knows his or her business better than anybody else and should know their customers equally well.

It is important to convey your information in a way that shows your expertise in the subject matter, but is also jargon free and easy to understand. Don’t confuse your customers with technical slang.

The Design

Simplicity is the key to unlock the secret to a good website. Internet users have short attention spans so your site needs to grab their attention as soon as they land on your home page.

Keep your menu structure simple, have enough copy to get the message across but don’t scare your customers off with a wall of text. Carefully placed images can break up your text and make your pages more aesthetically pleasing.

The Content

Your content needs to be informative but not excessive. Most web users only read a fraction of the text available on a website so it’s important to get your message across as briefly as possible.

Users will scan pages for the information they’re looking for, rather than read the whole page, so it’s important to break up your information with the use of sub headings and bullet points.

Taking these four factors into account should have you well on your way to online success.
